Starting Point

Independence Square

• Large central square with the statue of Samora Machel.
• Opposite: the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (modern architecture, shaped like a white pyramid).
• Next door: the Municipal Council (Maputo City Hall).

Stop 2 – Maputo Fortress

• Walk along Samora Machel Avenue to the edge of the bay.
• The Fortress of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the oldest building in the city (18th century).
• Museum with weapons, sculptures, and colonial history.

Stop 3 – Central Railway Station

• A few meters from the fortress, on 25 de Setembro Avenue.
• One of the most beautiful stations in the world, attributed to Gustave Eiffel. • You can visit the small railway museum.

Stop 4 – Mercado Central (Municipal Market)

• Walk along 25 de Setembro Avenue to the Mercado Central, in the heart of the city.
• Sells fruits, spices, handicrafts, and traditional foods.

Stop 5 – Jardim Tunduru (Botanical Garden)

• Near the market, on Samora Machel Avenue.
• Garden designed in the 19th century, ideal for a break in the shade.
